New Radnor community-owned pub now entering phase 4 consultation
THE Radnor Arms located in New Radnor, Presteigne, has begun its consultation for phase 4 development three years out from community ownership.
Having recently completed phase 3 developments that involved opening two wet bars, and serving as vital community hub for New Radnor and the surrounding villages, phase 4 consulting has begun.
It is thanks to the wonderful support from volunteers, shareholders, and the wider community that the Radnor Arms is once again open, and is being used for a wide variety of diverse community events.
Some of these events include warm spaces, dementia group, pride, Eurovision and holiday celebrations such as Christmas, Boxing day and New Years.
Now the pub is looking ahead to phase 4, shareholders input is required to drive the community project forward. The committee is working with Hiraeth Architecture, who are building on ideas shared through previous community surveys and the Radnor Arms' business plan, alongside Powys County Council's requirement to rebuild the demolished sections of the pub.
The opportunity gives the pub a real chance to make better use of the space, help secure the pub's future, and to create even more benefits for the local community of New Radnor and surrounding communities.
During the consultation period the Radnor Arms wants to hear from not only shareholders, but from members of the wider community too. Who's ideas and suggestions are important in helping shape what comes next for the community pub.
Since Saturday 10 September, architect boards having been erected in the pub for shareholders and locals to pop-in and see. The boards that are drawn up illustrate the plans for phase 4, and offer a chance for shareholders and locals to share their opinions.
The consultation boards bring together the history and condition of the building, and implement feedback from previous community consultations and some early ideas for future of the pub.

The ideas include essential repairs to the roof, external walls and first floor, a kitchen to support a wider food offering, a flexible function room for community activities, celebrations and events, improved toilets and accessibility, better connections between the existing bars, new spaces and outdoor areas, potential guest accommodation on the first floor and improvements to the beer garden, parking and surrounding areas.
The concept sketches are not the finished design but are a representation of the feedback received, nothing has been decided on by the committee, and public feedback will help shape how the proposals develop going forward.

The boards are available to look at in the Radnor Arms during regular pub opening hours, you can view them below:

An estimated broad cost has been calculated for phase 4 to be completed, which is between £750,000 to £1 million. The eventual cost and how the money will be raised will depend on the design agreed upon, and the extent of the work required.
As this is the first proposals for phase 4, detailed costings, rooms sizes, the number of people who could be seated for meals has not yet been determined by the committee.
The committee will will take onboard the responses from the pubs shareholders and the local community on the feedback forms which Hiraeth will collate. At that point a detailed analysis will then be presented to shareholders and the community fleshing out the final details.
The Radnor Arms wants to hear from as many people as possible at this vital stage of the community project, so please feel free to share your ideas.
They'd like to know: What would you most like to see? What is important to keep? Is there something we've overlooked?
Whether your ideas are big or small, practical or imaginative, they would love to hear them. This is your opportunity to continue to help shape the future of the Radnor Arms community pub.
